A good nonprofit website will capture the attention of the viewer, give them the information they require and spur interested parties to action, whether it is to sign up for a newsletter, donate or inquire about volunteering. But as we browse the web, we see that many NFP websites miss the mark, for quite a number of reasons.

Here are some of the common website mistakes that many nonprofit organisations make.

Lack of Detail about Vision

Your website needs to entice viewers to support your mission. It should convince readers to sign up with you and show them what you are doing differently to the other nonprofits. Why should they support your NFP? What makes you different from the others? By detailing your vision and your overall mission, potential donors and supporters can easily see why you are the best fit for them.

Missing Contact Information

Often the simplest things are left off the information and missing contact details are high on the list of typical NFP website mistakes. Make it easy for users to find all of your contact details including phone numbers, necessary email address and street address. It is also worth having a contact form for those wishing to reach out to your organisation easily.

Failure to Post Latest Updates

Your website should be updated regularly with all the latest news, interesting articles, events and other interesting tidbits of information. If you haven’t done so already, create a blog where you can easily post your latest content, allowing easy shares to your social media accounts.

Complicated Navigation

If visitors cannot find the information they seek, then your website is not useful. You may need to go back to the drawing board to determine how best to present the information. Visitors will only spend a few seconds looking for the information they require – if they cannot find it, then they will quickly walk away in frustration.

No Clear Call to Actions

Have you specifically explained how people could donate to your charity? Make it a straightforward and easy process to enable your supporters to dig deep. Is there a clear section where people can sign up for your newsletter? Don’t let all of your hard work go to waste – get them to sign up, so they keep up to date with everything that is going on.

Lack of Images

Too many words and not enough images can be problematic for your business. Show photos of your services, your volunteers and your team. Capture their attention with professional photographs that will encourage people to get involved. Share pictures of your fundraisers and recent events. A picture in the case of your website really is worth a thousand words.
