The previous post discussed some issue relating to motivating your committee of management and this post is intended to provide some ideas to try and address this issue.  The following provides a summary of some tips that may help:

  • Ensure there is a genuine set of objectives that have been derived from the strategic plan that give purpose and direction for the organisation and committee of management.
  • When the committee of management meetings occur ensure they keep to the agenda, run on time and are not side tracked by irrelevant discussions.
  • Make sure the roles and responsibilities of the committee of management are clear as well as for any sub committees.
  • Avoid the situation where the same people always appear to do the work as it should be shared around amongst the committee of management members.
  • At least once a year undertake an evaluation process and performance review of the committee of management as this helps to identify any issues that need to be addressed as well as how improvements can be made and implemented.
  • When meetings are run ensure they are not dominated by one or two people and ensure each committee of management member has a chance to participate.
  • Ensure that any decisions or actions that are formally agreed on during the meeting are undertaken and confirmed that they have occurred at a later meeting.

Depending on the circumstances there may be more ways to address the issue of motivation.  As discussed in the previous post the issue involving motivation can be sensitive as it can imply criticism so it needs to be managed carefully.  If done well the committee of management will come out of it in a far better state with improved performance to the benefit of the organisation and the cause or community it supports.
