It is fair to say that members of a committee of management of large not for profit organisations will usually have a good idea of their role and how it fits in with organisational goals. That is not always true of small not for profits.

The committees of many small organisations are made up of people who want to contribute something to the community and have the time to do so, or they are parents of the children the organisation is assisting.  Think of your local sporting or kindergarten committees.  How many committee members truly understand what they have signed up for? How many understand the implications of the role?

In previous posts we have discussed recruitment and induction of committee members but a recent newsletter from NFP Management Solutions made mention of similar issues.  We thought it would be worthwhile sharing the tips with you.

By following these tips you will be able to make sure that all of your committee members are aware of their legal roles and responsibilities.

NFP Management Solutions shared these tips:

  • Implement an induction program on the mission, objects, strategic plan, activities, policies, practices and procedures of the organisation for all incoming management committee/ board members, staff and volunteers.
  • Create an information pack on the organisation for prospective management committee/ board members, staff and volunteers.
  • Management committee/ board members, staff and volunteers should all have a refresher on these issues periodically.

Even if your not for profit is a small local tennis club, committee members carry as much responsibility as those of huge charity organisations.  For your sake and theirs, be certain they understand that.
