With the start of the new financial year, one area that can be overlooked is the importance of engaging with your members. Depending on the type and structure of your organisation these members may be formally registered members, parents, fee paying members or simply people from the general public who have an interest and support your organisation. No matter what form or method they are members they have an important role as they not only support your organisation but they provide an incredibly valuable resource.
They can provide this valuable resource in many ways and this may include in the form of donations which can be through financial contributions or through volunteering. As a volunteer this may be through helping at fundraising events, working bees or even helping with the delivery of some of your programs. For example, many not for profit organisations rely on volunteers to provide services such as meals on wheels, counselling services or office administration support.
As highlighted at the start of this post, take the time at the start of the financial year to start or continue engaging with your members. This may be via a simple newsletter, email or update provided on the website but importantly ensure the focus is on the members and the importance and value they provide to the organisation.
Ideas to include in the communication may include a brief overview of plans for the year that relate to events, significant activities as well as opportunities relating to how they may be able to assist the organisation. Also, as your Annual General Meeting is likely to occur in the next month or so it provides an excellent opportunity to promote that event and to formally invite them to attend. Furthermore, often new board members will come from your members so if you are recruiting for new board member then this is also a good way to seek interest from prospective board members.
The important issue is that you actively engage with the members as they genuinely have an interest in your organisation and the value and importance of this support is significant. The support provided not only can save on costs but they also provide a great opportunity for active involvement by members of the community.
