Conflict resolution is a skill that is sadly missing in many committees. Like it or not, conflicts are a part of running any sort of organisation. NFPs are, sadly, not immune to them, either.
Whether it is a rift between board members, conflicts of interest, or a dissatisfied beneficiary, being able to resolve the conflict effectively can prevent discomfort within your wider team, and unwanted publicity and perception.
Dealing with conflicts well can also help you to establish risk management processes, which will help to reduce the risk of conflict in the future.
The NSW government has produced a Conflict Resolution Toolkit, specifically designed for Not For Profit organisations.
It provides a sound framework and process for dealing with conflicts, and ensuring the best resolution for when they do occur, including:
- Preventing disputes
- Negotiation, and
- Processes
Essentially, it provides information, support, and useful tips and skills on the areas where conflicts arise, and ways they can be addressed. This includes process that either help you, give you advise, and/or help you to make a decision when you may find yourself at a stale mate.
The Conflict Resolution Toolkit is available online, having been launched by the NSW Minister for Volunteering, John Ajaka, in Sydney, and is part of a trial service which focuses on support for mediation between volunteers and organisations.
