revitalise your boardBoredom and burn out are two dangers that even the most talented and dedicated board members eventually face. Left untreated, these dangers can lead to distraction, and a less effective board. Try a few of these tips to keep your board members energised about their role in your organization.

Shake Things Up

Routines can be great in the short term, as routines can help members to work together more efficiently. Routines and standard operating procedures also allow each board member to know what to expect from others, as well as to know what is expected from them, but following the same pattern or routine over time can become very tedious and boring. From time to time reconsider the committees to which individual members are assigned.  Look for ways to match assignments with individual members who have competencies and interests in those specific areas. Provide direction to your board members to ensure that the board’s committees and task forces are formed around activities that support the board’s goals and governance objectives.

Knowledge is Power

Help your board members stay interested in their roles by tasking them with becoming the in-house “expert” on specific topics related to the board’s objectives and ask them to share routine information with the board through written reports.  This will help to ensure that each board member is on the “same page” as others, and that each will benefit from the knowledge and expertise of other members.  It will also cut down on the tedious aspects of discussing routing information during meetings and free up more time for actual planning and action.

Sharing is Caring

Let your board members know how well they are fulfilling their role by providing regular feedback and sharing your evaluation of their performance. Look for opportunities to support the members by providing access to peer and mentor training, as well as seek opportunities to expand the board’s community outreach.

These are just three options that may make a difference to your board.  What other options can you think of?
