communicationIs your organisation understood by the general public?  A major issue that faces some not for profit organisations is that the public have a different impression or understanding about what the organisation actually does and why it exists.  This lack of understanding can impact on your organisation in many ways.  For example, the services you provide are not utilised as much as they could be, the amount and volume of donations has decreased or maybe attendances at events is less than what you would expect or planned for.

As a treasurer or committee of management member you should have relevant key performance indicators that compare how the current performance measures against previous performance.

While there are several different ways to address these issues one of the most effective strategies to help spread your message is your communication with the public.

Here are some tips to help with getting a clear and concise message out about your organisation.

  • As with any marketing, promotion or communication strategy you must know who your target audience is.
  • Once you know your market then ensure you provide relevant information to them so that it engages with them.  For example, providing information for the sake of it will only lose the interest of the audience.
  • Don’t make the mistake of always using your communications just to ask for donations, trying to sell products or asking for participation at events.  While this is important and relevant ensure you mix up the content.
  • Importantly, make sure you provide the information in an interesting and professional way.  If you have information on your website, Facebook, in an email or a newsletter make sure the information is accurate, hyperlinks work and has been proof read.
  • Incorporate ways that allow the audience to participate and interact with your organisation such as through competitions, asking for feedback on services or seeking suggestions or their views on relevant issues.

These are just some suggestions that you can implement so your organisation is better understood by your audience.  As noted above, it is important that you measure the performance so you know what is effective as well as identifying the need to change if needed.
