Have you considered having an ambassador for your organisation?  The right ambassador can make a significant difference with raising the profile of the organisation, the promotion of major events as well as playing a key role with the fundraising strategy.  It is important that the ambassador is not seen as a figure head or they are there for their own self-promotion but they actively undertake their role that they have been recruited to do.  As such, they should be good at speaking, engaging as well as being able to influence people.

The ambassador does not have to be a famous or a high profile person but there are some key characteristics that they should address.

These include:

  • They have a story to tell that relates to their personal experiences that can be seen as being inspirational.
  • They have a genuine passion and enthusiasm that they can communicate as this can motivate people to respond, participate and donate.
  • They have a vision for the organisation that they genuinely believe in.  This is important as the community may ask what the point or purpose is of the ambassador.
  • The ambassador should be aware of specifics associated with the organisation and know what programs, projects or activities require funding.

In addition, there is no reason why you can’t have more than one ambassador as long as they are clear in their role.  They also need to be properly supported and this must come from the board as well as the executive management of the organisation.  Furthermore, as with any volunteer of the organisation make sure they have objectives that they understand and that they are given recognition and acknowledgement for their role.

As noted at the start, the role of an ambassador can significantly assist with raising the profile of the organisation, the promotion of major events as with the fundraising.  Therefore, you should try to obtain or recruit the right ambassador for your organisation.
