The only security issue Robin Hood had to deal with was staying out of sight of the Sheriff and his men.  Today we have so many different devices and gadgets that we use for our business and personal use we need to be aware of security issues.  These security issues can relate to your office as well as any portable devices you have.  In addition, as we are at the end of the year and your office may be closed over the Christmas and New Year period while you take a holiday, spending a few moments to ensure that you have taken appropriate steps is well worth the effort.   As such, have a look at the following checklist:

  • Take backups of your data, files, contacts or photographs.   This not only applies to your office or home computer but also your mobile phone, laptop or iPad.
  • Make sure you have some form of anti-virus on your computers and that it performs a scan on a regular basis.
  • Change and update any passwords.  While you should do this on a regular basis, the end of year is often a good time to do it.  This also applies to your security and alarm systems as well.
  • Set up any portable devices such that you need to enter a password or pin code to access the device.  If you lose or have your device stolen then this simple step can save a lot of grief.
  • If you are travelling and using your mobile phone, laptop or iPad don’t allow open insecure access for Wi-Fi.  If you need to use public Wi-Fi ensure you use secure encrypted connections.
  • Try to avoid using public computers if you can but if you need to use them only access general sites for general information.  Never use them for confidential transactions where you need a password such as, for example, a bank, emails or even Facebook as the computer may be infected with spyware that makes it easy to record your details.
  • Be careful with downloading applications.  It can be tempting to download a lot of free or cheap applications but check reviews or comments and try to establish if the developer is credible.  In some cases you may find the app does not do what you expect and your personal details have been forwarded such that you constantly received spam or advertising materials.

As mentioned at the start, take some time to check and review your security issues as it will be time well spent.  At the end of the day simply weigh up what information you have that you can’t afford to lose, be it business or personal related and then ensure you have taken steps to ensure it is backed up and protected.
