If you’re like many nonprofits, you may have hundreds, even thousands of followers on various social media channels, but very few of your supporters actually interact or respond to your posts. While there is not a magic secret to social media success, the following tips can help your NFP to create posts that are more interesting to your followers.
Create Content Your Supporters Will Respond to
If you want to capture the interest of your audience, you must first create posts that connect with them on an emotional level. Avoid posting generic links. Instead, create posts that tell your nonprofit’s story on a very human, relatable level.
Posts that show, and tell, who is impacted by your work, and how the work is accomplished are always more interesting.
Use images, videos and infographics to help you convey just what is at stake, but not everything has to be serious. It’s okay, and very desirable, to be funny and entertaining in some of your posts, as well as informative.
Tailor Your Content to Match the Channel
When creating social media posts, make certain that you are creating content that matches the format of a specific social media channel. For example, Facebook is probably the best choice for those longer, detailed and compelling human-interest stories about the individuals that benefit from your nonprofit’s work.
Choose Twitter for breaking news, and other alerts since you only have a limited number of characters to work with when you make a post.
Instagram and Snapchat are platforms that allow you to tell your stories visually, so use them to post pictures, videos and other images that offer behind the scenes looks and insider details of your NFP’s work.
Brand Your Posts, and Make Them Easy to be Found and Shared
One reason why your NFP might not be reaching its targets for engagement is that you aren’t following best practices for increasing engagement on social media. Use trending hashtags in all your posts to make certain they are easy to be found.
Encourage your supporters to share your posts and make it easy for them by including sharing buttons to major social media channels within the post.
Also, don’t forget to brand your posts to increase the name recognition of your nonprofit by always including your logo, as well as a link to your NFP’s website or donation page within each post.
Use Tools that Allow Supporters to Donate Directly Through Channel
While advocacy is an important part of building support for your nonprofit, fundraising remains a critical objective, and should remain a focus of all your social media posts. You can increase the likelihood that your audience will feel moved to give by using tools to allow supporters to donate to your nonprofit directly through the channel where you have made your post.
Don’t Forget to Respond
Regardless of which channel you choose to post on or the type of post that you have made, don’t forget to respond to your audience when they interact with your posts. Many times, engagement drops off on a nonprofit’s social media because they simply fail to respond to interactions.
Keep the conversation going! Thank followers for liking and sharing your posts! Ask followers what they liked, or didn’t like, about a post. Host contests and reward those who interact with your posts.
